[SEL] OT - another question....

This really does get confusing---to me, the double pitched roof is a
"gambrel", or very typical Midwest barn roof.

Of course, in many parts of the Midwest (especially up into Minnesota,
etc., the barns have curved roofs...this is just to disprove my
definition of the gambrel!!

For me, the "hip roof", is as has been explained already---if on a
square building, the roof would meet in a point; if rectangular, there
would be a short ridge.

Now to explain the differences: What you are calling a hip roof is
known to me as a cottage style roof. I don't recall hearing the Gambrel
name before. Your Gambrel is what I am calling a "hip roof". Even the
lumber yards around here use the term "hip roof" for the double sloped
roof. Your gable roof appears to be the same as ours
Kinda of makes it hard to explain things sometimes doesn't it?
