I've been using a serpentine belt to drive the generator on Dolly the 
Listeroid for 4 years now. Mike Montieth fabricated the pulley on the 
generator, and I use the flywheel rim as the drive pulley. Works fine. 
My simple tensioning system with the generator mounted on a board with 
two hinges and a turnbuckle to tighten it has had to be repaired a 
couple of times, but I haven't gotten around to making anything 
"better."
