Curt,
In those days there were alot  farmers with little pieces
of land in that area and they couldn't afford bigger equipment.
Mowing the harvest with mowers like this, one operated the horse
and the other made bundels with the rake of the falling harvest.
The cone forged the stalks to the clean side of the land, two or
three people walked behind the mower and were making sheafs
of the bundels, the last man (mostly women) sheave them for
extra drying a copple of days. After well drying they collect them
on a wagon and brought it home to thresh by hand or a collective
hired threshing machine.
